The Masseria is a set of rural buildings used for farms typical of Southern Italy , in particular of the agricultural areas of Puglia and takes its name from the household goods, a term that indicates the set of tools and furnishings of peasant use that were preserved in large stone buildings where both landowners and peasants lived. It is a typology of a typical house of the sixteenth century , the result of the colonization by the nobles of the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies of areas in a state of neglect, which also included space for stables, stores for fodder and crops.

Depending on the area in which it stands, the farm takes on a unique and characteristic appearance , due to the different construction techniques and cultivations and is generally characterized by large dimensions and a functional and well-organized subdivision of the spaces: owner's lodgings and for farmers, courtyard, stalls, work areas, tool sheds, product warehouses, wells and cisterns. Furthermore, the Masserie once owned by noblest and rich families, were also fortified and provided with walls and defensive towers.

The Trulli of Alberobello, which are an UNESCO World Heritage Site, are very famous and seem to be so rare but, actually, these houses are widespread in almost all of Puglia, especially in the Valle d 'Itria, between Bari and Taranto.
